Once part of the kingdom of Granada Marbella got its name from the Moors who called it Marbilha. It was not until the 20th century that the march of tourism transformed the town into one of the world's leading tourist resorts. Now a playground for the rich and famous the delights of Marbella are open to all of us so where to start? Let's go back in time and pay a visit to Orange Square and the Old Town.
This area is to the north of the main road and is a delightful honeycomb of narrow streets sheltering the walker from the sun. Homes, shops, restaurants and bars jostle with each other to claim your attention in competition with the colours of the tropical plants against the white buildings and the deep blue of the sky. Some important buildings too, the Town Hall, the 16th century Magistrates House and the town's first Christian Chapel, Santiago's. Close by there is the Castle. Dating back to the 9th century it was within these walls that Marbella was first formed. As you can see it has now spread way beyond those protective arms.
Now to the south side of the main street and the Alameda Park where we can explore the town in splendour by horse and carriage or, if it is Monday, spend a few euros at the very colourful weekly market. A little further and just a gentle stroll along the Avenida del Mar are the beaches, 26 kilometres in all but we don't suggest you walk every metre! Just stop now and then for the paella and the traditional fish and seafood favourites you will find on offer as you amble through. Whatever the time of day restaurants and bars abound, from tapas to top international cuisine - you can never go hungry on holiday in Marbella!
Shopaholics need have no fear either - from designer labels to tatty teashirts, all tastes are catered for and all budgets met. If you can't find it in Marbella try
PUERTO BANUS - Marbella's Marina for the better class of boat! Grab a beer and people watch or window shop until you drop. Ogle the luxury yachts especially the one in the Number 1 berth and imagine how you would feel if it was you the waitresses and barmen on board were waiting for!
El Corte Ingles department store will keep most of you occupied for a morning and there is a multi cine with English speaking films for the evening. There is a Casino for the more adventurous and regular boat trips for the seafaring folk amongst you.
A week is not enough!
